Humagne Rouge
AOC Valais
The name Humagne Rouge appeared for the first time in an inventory of grape varieties grown in Fully around 1900. For the last twenty years or so, it has been known that this grape variety is identical to Cornalin from Valle d'Aosta. This identity was recently confirmed by DNA tests. Humagne Rouge is the result of a natural cross between Cornalin from the Valais and an unknown grape variety. Humagne Rouge almost disappeared from the Valais, with only 5 or 6 plots remaining in the 1960s. A revival of interest in the 1980s saw Humagne Rouge take its rightful place among the traditional Valais grape varieties. For the past two decades, Humagne Rouge has been enjoying a revival, and the area under cultivation is increasing year on year.
A slow maceration lasting 23 days gently extracts the colour and tannins responsible for the structure of this red wine. This speciality is then matured in vats for eight months, during which time it undergoes a second fermentation.
